As Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey returns Odysseus to the screen, this video follows a migration story from the end of the Bronze Age: Mycenaean Greeks leaving a collapsing world and moving east across the Mediterranean.

Around 1200 BCE, palaces fell, trade networks fractured, and populations shifted from Greece to Cyprus, Anatolia, and the Levant. Egyptian inscriptions name groups such as the Denyen, Ekwesh, Tjeker, Sherden, and Peleset, but their identities remain disputed. We examine the evidence connecting some of them to the Aegean, including possible links between ancient names, Philistine DNA, Mycenaean-style pottery, and the routes taken by displaced migrants, merchants, craftspeople, and raiders. Cyprus emerges as the key crossroads, a trading hub and possible base for piracy where Greek, Eteocypriot, Phoenician, and Near Eastern cultures blended. We also explore how Aegean settlers helped shape Philistine society, whether conflict with pork-eating Philistines influenced the later Jewish pork taboo, and how Cyprus helped transform Astarte into Aphrodite. The answer is more complex than a simple invasion: the Sea Peoples were diverse, and some Greeks likely joined them as settlers, traders, mercenaries, and raiders. This is the human story behind one of history’s greatest mysteries.
