Andy Biggs, fear a CBDC could enable government control over personal finances, citing Canada’s 2022 account freezes during trucker protests as a warning. This resonates with Revelation 13:16-17, which warns of a system controlling buying and selling. The bill’s passage, despite opposition from 12 Republicans, raises questions about GOP unity and whether it aligns with Trump’s anti-CBDC stance. As Christians, the potential for a CBDC to monitor or restrict transactions clashes with biblical calls for liberty and stewardship (Galatians 5:1). A cashless society could also exclude the vulnerable, contradicting Matthew 25:40’s call to serve the least.
By promoting stablecoins as a cash alternative, the bill could accelerate a cashless society, where digital payments dominate. A 2024 IMF study suggests stablecoins could bridge the gap to CBDCs by familiarizing users with digital currencies.
