1:00Now PlayingMotanka is a traditional Ukrainian doll, one of the most ancient handmade items in Ukrainian households. First Motanka was supposedly made about 5 000 years ago. Motanka is a house and family guard. It doesn’t have a face, because things with faces can have a soul. And trapping a soul inside of the doll can lead to a hunted doll. A cross symbolizes 4 seasons and 4 sides of the earth.
Motankas are always handmade. Scissors and knives are forbidden and the entire doll is supposed to be made by using knots. It used to be made of any pieces of fabric that could be found at home.
But now, people who make motankas are real artists. One of those artists is Larissa Oliynyk, who lives in Irpin. As you know, that city was majorly destroyed by the Russian army. Larissa’s house was seriously damaged as well. But some of her motankas survived. She wants to make more of them to restore the house.
