MPs have voted by 385 to 100 – a majority of 285 – to pass a Covid vaccine mandate for NHS workers in England into law.
It comes as the government’s new Plan B restrictions went to a Commons vote, in which Boris Johnson faced a rebellion of unprecedented scale, on Tuesday evening.
The most significant rebellion came in the Commons vote on Covid passes. A vote also took place on mandatory face masks in most indoor settings.
New rules were announced in a major address last Wednesday as part of the government’s strategy to tackle the spread of the Omicron variant.
In November, health secretary Sajid Javid announced plans to make it compulsory for frontline NHS staff to be fully vaccinated against Covid. The rule will not come into force until April.
The issue has raised concerns among MPs about individual liberty and the impact it will have on staffing levels, but a huge rebellion was not expected.
Former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, was among those to vote against the plan.
