“Just when it seemed like life would return to normal, we could be entering the worst part of the pandemic,” Gates tweeted Tuesday. “Omicron will hit home for all of us. Close friends of mine now have it, and I’ve canceled most of my holiday plans.”
In the continuing thread of seven tweets, Gates went on to state that despite the surge and instances of breakthrough infections, the coronavirus vaccinations continue to offer protection against severe illness.
“Vaccines are designed to prevent people from getting seriously ill or dying & are doing that well,” he wrote.
This notion has been supported by top health experts, with former Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb saying there is “no indication” the omicron variant causes more severe illness than previous coronavirus strains.
On Tuesday, White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci said the rate of the omicron variant’s spread is "truly unprecedented," adding, “It's not surprising that just a week or two ago we had only 8 percent to 10 percent, and now we have 73 percent of all the isolates are omicron.”
Gates echoed this notion, but added that the omicron variant is moving so quickly it should become the dominant variant and the surge could abate in less than three months.
