16:46Now PlayingFugitive lawyer Richard Merritt took the stand Tuesday and told the jury an entirely new story about how his mom, Shirley Merritt, was brutally murdered in her Georgia home. Merritt claimed armed home invaders “skewered and bludgeoned” his “dear mother” before threatening to kill his family. The disgraced attorney continued to explain he fled to Tennessee in his mother’s car and started an entirely new life under an alias out of fear of the so-called “monsters” who killed Shirley. Merritt was scheduled to surrender to prison for financial crimes the day after his mother was killed and he fled the state, never reporting to his prison sentence.
