Officers initially took Whitmire into custody on a warrant for communicating violent threats to his family. However, the situation escalated when Whitmire allegedly assaulted the cops during the arrest, resulting in additional charges being filed against him.
The bodycam video depicts officers struggling with Whitmire as they attempt to detain him. Punches appear to be thrown and a physical altercation ensues between Whitmire and the police on the scene. In response to the incident shown in the footage, the Asheville Police Department charged Whitmire with multiple counts of assault on law enforcement officers. The release of the bodycam video footage came after a judge's order making it public record, stemming from community outrage over a bystander's video clip of part of the arrest circulating online.
