During the pre-evidentiary hearing for Ashley Benefield’s self-defense claim, the state played audio from a previous 2018 custody hearing between Ashley and her then husband Doug Benefield. In the audio, the judge slammed Ashley’s claims that Doug poisoned her and she was a battered wife, stating “there isn’t a scintilla of truth” to her claims. The judge ended up denying her request for an injunction against Doug — allowing him to see their daughter, who was a newborn at the time. Ashley Benefield was arrested two years after that hearing for second-degree murder — accused of killing Doug. Ashley and her defense team claim the deadly shooting was out of self-defense because Doug had attacked her.
