Christopher Scholtes, 37, told police he had left the toddler parked directly in the sun in the family home’s driveway with the AC running so she could sleep, but told investigators the car’s auto-off function must have kicked in. On the scorching 109-degree day, first responders rushed to help the child but were unable to resuscitate her.
