Witnesses said a Florida man identified as Wade Wilson was responsible for the murders and even attacked another woman during his spree in Cape Coral. Wilson, who shares the name of the superhero Deadpool, was charged with the murders after the third woman who survived detailed her horrifying experience. Melisa Montanez, an ex-girlfriend of Wade Wilson, was able to escape his attack that same day. Montanez said Wilson called her using Melton's phone and tried to pick her up in the stolen car. The survivor fought back and refused to get into the car with him before he left and encountered Ruiz.
