Live Coverage: WI v. Chandler Halderson Sentencing in Parents’ Murder and Dismemberment

Happening in Court:

Date of crime: Est. between July 1 and July 8, 2021

The Wisconsin man convicted of killing and dismembering his parents is scheduled for a sentencing hearing Thursday. Chandler Halderson, 24, was found guilty in January of murdering father Bart Halderson, 50, and mother Krista Halderson, 53. Court is set to start at 1:30 p.m. CT / 2:30 p.m. ET.

Defendant Halderson killed them after his father found out he was lying about going to college. It turned out that he had been mooching off them. He lied about having an insurance company job and having trouble getting paid, volunteering with police in a scuba rescue team, and getting a job offer from SpaceX, prosecutors said. He even lied about sustaining a serious concussion, which required him to miss out on the fabricated SpaceX offer.

Halderson cut up his parents’ bodies and hid them throughout Wisconsin, then pretended they went missing while on a trip. He even took advantage of his girlfriend’s family, hiding Bart’s torso on their property. From this body part, they were able to figure out Chandler shot his father in the back. Investigators have only been able to find parts of Krista’s legs, however, so they cannot determine how her son killed her.

Halderson requested to waive his appearance at Thursday’s sentencing. Judge John Hyland denied this request.

One of Krista’s friends, identified through her initials, wrote a lacerating victim impact statement ahead of the hearing. She demanded the maximum sentence.

Chandler Halderson “has never given a reason why he did this heinous act of violence,” she wrote. “His parents DID NOT deserve this. Chaz,” she wrote, referring to the defendant by his nickname, “sent my husband and I on a wild goose chase to their cottage, knowing that they never went there.”

She said Krista was like a sister to her for 39 years. She lamented how the couple will never get a chance to see enjoy retirement and their grandchildren.

“Chaz,” she wrote, “you have made the world a darker place for taking the lives of two truly beautiful people.”
