On the day O'Keefe was pronounced dead, at 12:55am, Read messaged O’Keefe saying “I’m going home” and “See you later.” A short time later, Read sent O’Keefe “I’m back in Mansfield, your kids are home alone.”

Karen Read faces several charges including second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol, and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. She was arrested in February of 2022, a few days after John O’Keefe died. If convicted, Read faces life in prison.
