Ashley Benefield said she killed Doug in self-defense. During the hearing, the court went over a 911 call that was made by Benefield's neighbor after Ashley allegedly ran for help. The judge excluded some parts of the call, stating they could be readmitted later.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
