The prosecution said Simon killed her 2-year-old son, Quinton, drove to a nearby dumpster, and threw his body in the trash. Quinton’s remains were eventually found in a landfill. Several interrogation clips were played throughout the state’s opening statement. Prosecutors say Leilani lied several times to investigators and local news media outlets. Leilani was seen wiping her eyes behind her glasses while watching old bodycam and listening to old interviews.

A week later, detectives found the boy's body in a dumpster at the Azalea Mobile Home Park, where Simon and her son lived, and discovered more remains at a local landfill. Simon was charged with malice murder, concealing the death of a person, making false statements, and false reporting. If convicted, she could face life in prison
