The case against a Florida babysitter accused of killing a 10-month-old by leaving her in a hot car started Wednesday. In the state’s opening statement, prosecutor Ralph Yazdiya said Rhonda Jewell was careless and left baby Ariya Paige alone in a hot car for at least five hours. When first responders arrived, investigators said the child had already been dead for quite some time.

Florida babysitter Rhonda Charmane Jewell was arrested after she allegedly left a 10-month-old infant she was taking care of in a hot car, which reached a scorching temperature of 113 degrees Fahrenheit. The infant was found dead after being left in the heat for over five hours. The 46-year-old was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and faces life behind bars if convicted.
