Thirty-one-year-old Deobra Redden is accused of attempted murder, battery, extortion by threat, intimidating a public officer, and willful disregard for the safety of others after he attacked District Judge Mary Kay Holthus in January 2024 during a hearing where Holthus was sentencing him for an unrelated attempted battery charge. Redden's defense attorneys argued that he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which allegedly caused him to lunge at the judge after he failed to take his medication. Judge Holthus said Redden slammed her head against the wall before he grabbed her head and ripped some of her hair out.
