Gypsy spoke about her relationship with her mother and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, prior to the gruesome murder. She revealed that she felt her mother controlled every aspect of her life and manipulated her into believing she was sick and unable to walk. She later stated that she "felt safer in jail than in the care of her own mother."
