Defense attorneys argued that constitutional protections require a jury — not prosecutors alone — to determine factors that could expose her to harsher punishment in adult court. Prosecutors pushed back, arguing Florida law allows the case to be directly filed in adult court. The judge ultimately ruled that current law supports keeping the case in adult court and ordered the proceedings to continue there.
