Free said she had known Crystal since childhood and described her as a lifelong Dodge County resident with learning disabilities who relied on family support and Social Security. She testified that Crystal and Zachariah were in the process of divorcing in 2024 and that Crystal was excited about moving forward with her life, including plans to move into subsidized housing on July 1, 2024. Free also told jurors that family members were helping Crystal prepare for the transition by organizing her belongings and placing them in storage.
