During Erik Mendoza's sentencing, family members and loved ones addressed the judge and asked for the maximum sentence. Mendoza killed 5-year-old Prince McCree in October 2023. In July 2024, David Pietura, his co-defendant, was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the death of McCree. Prince’s father addressed the judge and said that he would strangle Mendoza if he ever got the opportunity and that he wished Mendoza got released so he could do all the things Mendoza did to his son to him. Others remembered Prince as a ‘light’ and shared memories of him.
