Escalera, who pleaded guilty after spending nearly two and a half years in jail, apologized to Kilman’s family during an emotional sentencing hearing, saying he wished he could go back and change what happened. Kilman’s loved ones shared heartbreaking victim impact statements, describing the lasting pain caused by his death. A Taylor County judge ultimately sentenced Escalera to 40 years in prison, noting that a mental health crisis appeared to have played a role in the crime.
