When 33-year-old Caitlin Spence called 911, she said she had just found her boyfriend, Kirby Carpenter, outside their home — after two days of not hearing from him.

That discovery launched an investigation that quickly spiraled far beyond a missing-person call.

Within weeks, Kirby’s girlfriend Caitlin, and her parents Jeff and Karen Spence, were all charged in connection with the case.

But when the case reached trial, only one person actually faced a jury:
