The officer's trying to see if you're impaired. The way they do that is they look at your eyes to see if they're bloodshot, they smell the odor of alcohol on your breath, they see if your speech is slurred and they also were already watching you drive your car before the detention occurred. So they're looking at your normal faculties, is the word they use, to see if they're impaired based on alcohol or drugs.
