Andrew Marr analyses Tuesday's Covid-19 inquiry testimonies, on a day when it was heard Boris Johnson believed Covid to be 'nature's way' of dealing with the elderly.
He is joined by Professor John Edmunds, a member of SAGE, who sat on several expert committees during the pandemic.
The Covid-19 inquiry formally commenced on the 28th June 2022, with the second stage now underway. It is set to hear evidence about decision-making in Westminster during the pandemic, spanning from early January 2020 to February 2022.
Giving evidence first on Monday 30th October, the inquiry heard from Martin Reynolds, a key aide to Boris Johnson during the pandemic. He admitted to turning ‘disappearing’ WhatsApp messages on in a group with senior officials because he ‘may’ have been worried about information being leaked - although he said he could not exactly remember.
Today, Tuesday 31st October, Dominic Cummings denied he contributed to a lack of effectiveness among ministers during the Covid crisis after he was asked about language he used against them.
He revealed that Boris Johnson was referred to as a 'trolley' by Downing Street staffers, referring to the then-prime minister's propensity to change direction.
He also stated that he acted 'reasonably and legally' in a lockdown trip to Barnard Castle, which eventually led to his dismissal from Downing Street.
