Andrea Leadsom is ‘hugely, hugely delighted’ with Brexit | LBC

Businesses are warning the cost of groceries will go up as new post-Brexit checks on food and plants come into force.

The extra controls are starting exactly four years after the UK left the EU.

But Government minister Dame Andrea Leadsom told LBC she thinks it will only be a temporary problem.

Dame Andrea told LBC: “Inevitably businesses move on. We have signed up to 70 free trade deals - a huge opportunity for imports of cheaper goods.”

She told Nick Ferrari she is “hugely delighted” with Brexit and that Britain has its “sovereignty back”.

"The Brexit I campaigned for was about regaining our sovereignty, " she said.

"Those who think we should not have left the EU will continue to think that."

Small suppliers have warned that the new checks will mean higher prices and reduced options in shops.

The Guild of Fine Food (GFF), which represents 12,000 businesses said extra red tape will make bringing fine meat and cheese into the UK harder.
