After Tory MP Lee Anderson was suspended for refusing to apologise for saying Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan is controlled by "Islamists", the deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden declined to label Anderson's comments as Islamophobic.

He instead said he was "using the wrong words" and "not intending to be Islamophobic". The prime minister Rishi Sunak is yet to directly comment on Lee Anderson's remarks.
