16:53Now PlayingMissile attack was 'double defeat' for Iran, says UK foreign secretary - What should Israel do next, and what would you support?
Shelagh Fogarty hears from Dr Hisham Hellyer (05:28), a Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI - specialising in international security and the Middle East.
Dr Hellyer said, “Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus was reckless and Iran’s response was also a reckless move’”.
Earlier on Monday the UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, said Israel has "every right to respond but we are asking them to think with head as well as heart”.
“The best way is not to attack back,” he said, describing Iran’s strike as a “double defeat”.
Israel said Iran launched 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and at least 120 ballistic missiles late on Saturday, in an assault that set off air raid sirens across the country.
By Sunday morning Tehran said the attack was over and Israel reopened its air space having said it had intercepted along with its allies 99% of the projectiles launched towards its territory.
The assault came in response to a strike widely blamed on Israel on an Iranian consular building in Syria earlier this month, which killed two Iranian generals.
It is the first direct military attack launched by Tehran on Israel despite enmity dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
The latest development brought years of shadow war between the two foes out into the open as the conflict in Gaza inflames decades-old tensions in the Middle East.
