Sir Michael Marmot on why 'Britain is more miserable and poor' than ever | LBC analysis

"Let's start with where we are as a country, and I start with looking at health. Health is pretty fundamental. I mean, what else do you want a government to do? Then to look after the health of the population? Our life expectancy now is no better than it was in 2010. That's dramatic.

That's never happened before. We've never gone through a 12 year period, with no improvement in life expectancy never ever before.

Life expectancy before 2010 was increasing about one year every four years. And in the last 12 years, it has not increased the increase was slow. And then it went down with two years of COVID. Secondly, the inequalities in health have got bigger, that's by region

So if you live in the northeast or the Northwest, the consequences of deprivation for your health are bigger than if you live in London or the southeast. And thirdly, health for the poorest people is getting worse."
