as posted by the channelThe Home Secretary has announced new plans that would allow armed police officers who are charged following a police shooting to remain anonymous.
This comes after outrage was sparked over the naming of Sergeant Martyn Blake ahead of his trial, where he was cleared of the murder of Chris Kaba in south London.
He’s been forced into hiding, with round-the-clock protection, after Kaba’s gang placed a £10,000 bounty on his head.
Tom Swarbrick is joined by caller Julie, who is the widower of Inspector Douglas Lovelock, the police marksman whose shooting of Cherry Groce sparked the Brixton riots.
Inspector Lovelock was the officer who first entered the flat of Dorothy 'Cherry' Groce in Brixton in 1985, whilst looking for her 21-year-old son Michael Groce in relation to a robbery and suspected firearms offence.
Officers believed Michael Groce was hiding in his mother's home.
Caller Julie tells Tom Swarbrick that Mrs Groce mistakenly took the armed police officers for burglars, which led her to 'jump' onto Inspector Lovelock.
Julie told Tom, "She had children in the room and it was just her natural reaction to protect them.
"She just jumped and his gun went off. He didn't deliberately aim, he didn't mean to fire but the bullet went into her shoulder and left her paralysed - it was a terrible, terrible accident."
Julie gives Tom an insight how her family suffered as a result of the naming of her husband.
