NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said yesterday that "it is time to shift to a wartime mindset".

He added: "We are not ready for what is coming our way in four to five years. Danger is moving towards us at full speed...what is happening in Ukraine could happen here too."

Following this stark warning, Shelagh Fogarty was joined by Tobias Ellwood, former Defence Minister (2017-19) and Defence Select Committee Chair (2020-23) to discuss this.

The Conservative ex-minister has made similar comments in the past, and urged a move towards 3% GDP without waiting for NATO to debate this.

He added that should the UK become 'the target of a major acute event', the British people will ask: 'Why were were we not better defended?'.
