as posted by the channelAs the world waits to see if the latest ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas hold, James O’Brien wonders what will be left for Palestinians in Gaza following Israeli bombardment.
Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel killed at least 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals. In the time since, Israeli forces have killed at least 46,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to UN figures.
Israeli forces have also destroyed swathes of the Mediterranean territory’s homes and infrastructure, creating a large humanitarian crisis.
It’s estimated that 90 per cent — or 1.9 million people — in Gaza are displaced, while UN experts have also warned that Northern Gaza was on the brink of famine.
The scale of the war’s destruction has prompted James O’Brien to critique “unintentionally inaccurate” reporting that say that Palestinians in Gaza will be able to return home.
“And I thought, well, no they won’t,” James said.
“Because the footage that comes out of the strip looks almost like a sort of moonscape. It looks almost like apocalyptic.
“What are Palestinian people returning to?”
The latest ceasefire deal is yet to be finalised, as it presently hinges on a final vote in the Israeli cabinet.
