Immigration authorities are set to receive enhanced powers, modelled on counterterrorism measures, to combat the dangerous small boat crossings in the English Channel.

However, the new Bill, introduced by the Home Secretary, will not overturn some of the more controversial elements of illegal migration laws previously enacted by the Conservative government.

Under the proposals, Border Force officers will be able to seize phones and laptops from migrants arriving in the UK by boat or lorry without requiring an arrest.

Additionally, individuals involved in researching or planning crossings could face prison sentences of up to five years. Harsher penalties are also proposed for those supplying boats and engines to smuggling operations, with offenders facing up to 14 years behind bars.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Over the last six years, criminal smuggling gangs have been allowed to take hold all along our borders, making millions out of small boat crossings.

“This Bill will equip our law enforcement agencies with the powers they need to stop these vile criminals, disrupting their supply chains and bringing more of those who profit from human misery to justice.”
