Lewis said: 'Nigel Farage is calling all the shots...he has Kemi Badenoch and Keir Starmer running after him.'
He added that the perception that immigration rules aren't being observed gives rise to the 'fallacy that it's inherently right-wing to be tough on illegal migration'.
Nearly 4000 arrests have been made by immigration officers between when Labour won the election and January 31st, whihc comes as the government's Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill is to be debated in the Commons.
Border Security Minister Dame Angela Eagle said the government was ramping up its efforts to arrest people smuggling gangs.
