Russia will 'crush the will of European elites', former Kremlin adviser says | LBC

A former adviser to both Vladimir Putin and his predecessor Boris Yeltsin says Russia intends to "crush the will of European elites".

Russian foreign policy strategist Sergei Karaganov told LBC's Matt Frei that it was Brussels, not Moscow, that is risking another world war.

"If NATO expands to the borders of Ukraine and close to Russia, there will be war," Mr Karaganov said.

"The only thing I regret was that we waited for too long, and we trusted our European neighbours for too long."

Mr Karaganov also claimed that Europe was the "source" of all of the world's troubles for the "last 500 years", citing the experience of Balkans War.

The strategist's comments comes as Washington and Moscow continue to sideline Europe from peace negotiations over Ukraine — something Mr Karaganov was very much in favour of.

"Europe should be pushed aside as far away as possible," he said.

"You'd better change [Europe's] elites who are driving people as cannon fodder towards another world war."
