Gary Stevenson tells James O'Brien why the UK economy is 'broken'

Gary Stevenson joined James O'Brien on Full Disclosure to reflect on the experience of writing his book, The Trading Game.

The book charts his life up to 2014, when he left the financial industry, and explores questions around money, inequality, and morality.

Despite being hugely successful as a trader, Gary now uses his platform to highlight the dangers of wealth inequality and its growing impact on living standards.

But instead of engaging with those warnings, he says people often respond by asking how they too can get rich, or criticising him for not giving his money away.

He tells James that the world’s best traders are making “a ton of money” not by fixing the economy, but by understanding just how broken it is, and profiting from that knowledge.

Gary also shares his struggle with offering realistic advice to young people trying to get ahead financially today. “If you want to make money nowadays,” he says, “the best strategy is: have a rich dad.”

He takes aim at elite institutions for valuing wealth over intelligence, arguing that young people are trapped in a rigged system, judged by their income but given little real opportunity.

He compares it to a survival game, referencing the Hunger Games, where only a few make it out, and often at great personal cost.
