YouTube Description
as posted by the channelShelagh Fogarty speaks to Jimmy Rushton, foreign policy and security analyst, about Donald Trump's shifting stance on Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump has, for the first time, acknowledged Russia’s war on Ukraine as a “full-scale” invasion, a significant shift in language and a notable win for Kyiv. Until now, his administration had referred to it merely as the “Russia-Ukraine conflict,” stopping short of holding Moscow directly responsible.
A leaked minerals deal tied to the new agreement paves the way for future U.S. military assistance, likely to be funded through Ukraine’s extensive natural resources. Crucially, it also includes assurances that the U.S. will not oppose Ukraine’s efforts to join the European Union.
Rushton notes that Trump appears to be adopting a more pragmatic approach, driven by both diplomatic pressure and the economic potential of deeper U.S.-Ukraine ties. He adds that Trump seems to believe Putin “respects him” and maintains that the war would not have escalated had he still been in office.
