Lewis explores how the relationship between the President and the tech mogul, which appeared cordial only last week, has now descended into personal attacks, with Musk alleging Trump’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.
Lewis argues that this kind of political dysfunction is what happens when movements are built not on ideology, but on personality. “They can’t even govern themselves, let alone the rest of the country,” he says, drawing comparisons between US-style populism and similar trends in the UK.
There was always a sense of inevitability to the fallout, Lewis concludes – because "Trump needs enemies", and populist politics, at its core, is “based on chaos".
