Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on the UK and other countries that oppose his proposal to take over Greenland is “completely wrong”.
Starmer said that any decision about the future of Greenland “belongs to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark alone”.
Although he described the situation as “very serious”, Starmer appeared to rule out retaliatory tariffs, saying that a trade war is in nobody’s interest.
Trump has said he wants the “complete and total purchase” of the Danish territory, arguing that it is essential for US and global security, with the White House suggesting it could even be taken by military means.
On Saturday, the US president said he would impose 10% tariffs on the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland by 1 February, with the tariffs set to rise to 25% by 1 June.
Meanwhile, a message from Trump to the Norwegian prime minister has emerged in which he reportedly said that not being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize means he no longer has “an obligation to think purely of peace, although it will always be predominant”.
