13:41Now PlayingShelagh Fogarty speaks to LBC presenter Lewis Goodall about the controversy over Lord Mandelson’s appointment as UK ambassador to the US.
Lewis points out that 'Jonathan Powell said in black and white that this process had been rushed,' which 'doesn’t quite cohere with what the Prime Minister said about the full due diligence being paid.'
He also notes, “at no point during this entire process did Keir Starmer and Peter Mandelson actually have a conversation.”
The newly released documents show Prime Minister Keir Starmer was warned that Mandelson’s past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein posed a “general reputational risk.”
They also reveal Mandelson requested a £547,000 payout after being sacked last year, eventually receiving £75,000.
Cabinet Office minister Darren Jones told MPs that Mandelson “should never have been appointed” and said the due diligence “did not expose the depth and extent” of his relationship with Epstein.
