6:41Now PlayingAndrew Marr is joined by Conservative peer Michael Gove as Keir Starmer is facing a difficult set of election results with Labour suffering heavy losses in English local council polls.
Starmer took responsibility for Labour’s “tough” results, but said he was “not going to walk away” and would lead the party into the next general election.
As of late afternoon, Wes Streeting, Andy Burnham and Angela Rayner, seen as the leading potential challengers to Starmer, had not made any public comment on Labour’s losses.
With around half of local council results in, Labour has lost about 300 seats and 12 councils, including Essex, Hartlepool, Redditch and Westminster.
Reform UK surged, picking up net gains of over 500 seats. Nigel Farage claimed the results showed a “truly historic shift in British politics”.
