25:56Now PlayingLegal AF’s Ray Brescia is joined by Mack Jenkins, a partner at Hecker Fink LLP, one of the nation’s most respected litigation and investigations firms that has exhibited an uncommon willingness to stand up to the Trump Administration when many in Big Law have bent the knee and refused to defend the rule of law. But Jenkins is not just on the legal team litigating cases like Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem regarding the activities of federal immigration agents in California, he was also one of the Department of Justice’s leading anti-corruption attorneys, having worked in the DOJ for seventeen years, spanning four different presidential administrations. In this conversation, Jenkins and Brescia discuss the Vazquez Perdomo case, including how it lead Justice Kavanaugh to authorize racial profiling in immigration stops in his concurring opinion on the Court’s shadow docket. This led to the naming of such activities “Kavanaugh Stops.” But the
fallout from that ruling also resulted in Justice Kavanaugh reversing course just months later, clarifying that government officials cannot, in fact, racially profile people. Jenkins and Brescia also discuss the actions of firms like Hecker Fink in standing up for civil rights and the rule of law, when so many of the nation’s wealthiest, largest and most prestigious firms refuse to do so, and Jenkins’s views, as a DOJ veteran, on the reported chaos inside the Trump Justice Department. He concludes with inspiring words for those thinking of seeking a path in the law, explaining that lawyers who will defend the rule of law are needed now more than ever.
