The cause: the "use it or lose it" budget rule that forces agencies to burn through their allocation before the fiscal year ends or forfeit it. Under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the DOD spent $6.9 million on lobster tails, $2 million on Alaskan king crab, $15.1 million on ribeye steak, $139,000 on donuts, $124,000 on ice cream machines, a $98,000 Steinway grand piano for the Air Force Chief of Staff's home, $225 million on furniture including $12,000 fruit basket stands, and $60,000 Herman Miller recliners. In the final five working days alone, the Pentagon blew through $50.1 billion — more than the entire military budgets of Canada and Mexico combined. Weeks later, millions of Americans lost SNAP benefits during the government shutdown. The attorneys explain that at best this is grotesque waste, and at worst it could be fraud — inflated pricing, kickbacks, sweetheart vendor deals — potentially actionable under the False Claims Act, where whistleblowers can file sealed lawsuits and receive a portion of any recovery.
