8:10Now PlayingAttorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian dig into the allegations that Corey Lewandowski — Kristi Noem's unpaid "de facto chief of staff" at the Department of Homeland Security — was personally trying to cash in on billions in government contracts tied to Trump's mass deportation agenda. According to an NBC News investigation, Lewandowski allegedly demanded "success fees" from GEO Group, the country's largest private prison operator, in exchange for protecting and growing their DHS contracts. When GEO Group's founder refused, two of the company's federal contracts shrank and facilities sat idle — even as Congress poured money into DHS for deportations. A separate company called Salus allegedly told a marketing firm it would need to pay Lewandowski as a condition of landing a piece of the $220 million DHS advertising contract that featured Noem on horseback. At least four companies have made similar complaints, and those complaints reached Trump himself — who reportedly remarked, "Corey made out on that one." Lewandowski has denied everything. Trump's nominee to replace Noem, Markwayne Mullin, has said he supports an investigation.
