12:44Now PlayingAttorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian cover the latest embarrassment from Jeanine Pirro's office. After a federal judge quashed their subpoenas, finding "essentially zero evidence" of criminal wrongdoing and calling the investigation a pretext to pressure Jerome Powell into lowering interest rates or resigning, prosecutors from Pirro's office showed up unannounced at the Federal Reserve's construction site and asked for a tour. They were turned away by a building contractor. The Fed's outside counsel, Robert Hur, fired back in a letter saying Pirro's team was trying to "circumvent" the court's ruling and that the proper avenue to challenge it is through the courts, not by showing up at a job site. Brian and Shant explain the broader context: Trump wants Powell gone because he won't artificially lower interest rates, but the bogus investigation has actually backfired — Republican Senator Thom Tillis is blocking Trump's own nominee Kevin Warsh from being confirmed until the probe ends, and Powell has said he won't leave until it's resolved. Pirro brought in two special counsel prosecutors to run the investigation — one a GOP operative, the other a dance photographer — after career DOJ prosecutors apparently refused to do Trump's bidding. A prosecutor from Pirro's office conceded in a closed-door hearing before the judge that they "do not know" if Powell committed any improper conduct.
