ICE hasn't had a Senate-confirmed director since 2017. Schroyer rose from trooper to major within the Oklahoma Highway Patrol before joining DHS earlier this year as a senior adviser to Secretary Markwayne Mullin, his fellow Oklahoman whose security detail he once ran. He has never held a position within ICE. The White House pitch: 29 years of state law enforcement experience and participation in the 287(g) program that deputizes local cops as immigration agents. Brian and Shant can't find evidence of how many people Schroyer has managed, any federal policy experience, or any immigration enforcement background beyond a training course. The nomination follows months of ICE leadership chaos: Todd Lyons resigned in May, and David Venturella, the private prison executive with the girlfriend deportation scandal, has been acting director since. Shant says the pick is deliberate: no controversy, no baggage, just a uniform and a loyalty card. Brian's prediction: the confirmation hearing will be the first time most senators hear his name.
