11:47Now PlayingAttorneys Brian Kabateck and Shant Karnikian cover the collapse of the Trump administration's anti-protest prosecutions in the Northern District of Illinois, the office that brought down Al Capone and Rod Blagojevich. Of 62 federal assault and interference charges brought against protesters under 18 U.S.C. Section 111, 59 have been abandoned or dismissed, one resulted in a guilty plea, and zero have produced a trial conviction. The centerpiece was the Broadview Six: six Democratic activists and candidates charged with felony conspiracy for surrounding an ICE vehicle during a September 2025 protest. It took prosecutors three attempts to get a grand jury indictment. Then Judge April Perry held a closed-door hearing revealing prosecutors had committed misconduct by "vouching" for evidence before the grand jury. U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros apologized and dismissed all charges. ICE's Greg Bovino called the prosecutors "a limp dish rag." Brian's response: the cases aren't weak, you're weak. Career prosecutors are leaving in droves because they're being forced to bring unwinnable political cases instead of pursuing real crimes. Brian and Shant note the chilling effect is the point: even when charges get dropped, the defendants lose jobs, drop out of races, and spend thousands on legal fees. Catherine Sharp dropped her Cook County Board candidacy citing the "emotional and financial" cost. That's the real conviction rate.
