Brian and Shant detail how the Palos Verdes city council forced Trump to deed the flagpole's land to the city and go through California Coastal Commission review before he'd get his conditional use permit, a process that dragged on for roughly a decade. Brian and Shant also share previously unreported details from sources involved in the fight: Trump planted illegal, unpermitted ficus trees to block neighboring homeowners' ocean views because he found the houses ugly, telling one homeowner directly that her house was ugly and his golf club's members shouldn't have to look at it. A letter Trump wrote to the local newspaper editor at the time — which Brian and Shant obtained and quote from — falsely claimed his course was the "number one rated course in California," while griping that the city made him "take down magnificent bushes that covered garbage cans." Brian and Shant tie this decades-old grudge directly to the present: in May 2026, Trump's Commerce Secretary ordered a federal review of the California Coastal Commission, accusing the state of "environmental extremism" over offshore drilling, spaceport, and desalination permitting — a review Brian and Shant argue is retribution dressed up as policy, since the funding at stake is a few million dollars mostly paid into the commission by Californians, including Trump himself. Brian's bottom line: a leopard doesn't change its spots, and the same petty landlord who fought his neighbors over ocean views twenty years ago is now using the full power of the federal government to settle the score.
