0:59Now PlayingThe ongoing conflict between academic freedom and religious sensitivities has once more taken the spotlight, with San Francisco State University (SFSU) facing criticism. A recent dispute emerged following claims that the university intended to investigate Dr. Maziar Behrooz, an associate history professor, for displaying an image of the Prophet Muhammad during a lecture on Islamic history. The controversy unfolded in Professor Behrooz's Fall 2022 course when a deeply religious Muslim student took great offense at the illustration of the Prophet Muhammad presented in class. Although the professor tried to clarify that not all Muslims shared the student's perspective, tensions escalated, leading the student to file complaints with the university's history department chair and other SFSU higher-ups. The repercussions of this event have been substantial, as SFSU's Office of Equity Programs & Compliance notified Professor Behrooz of a pending investigation in March 2023. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) has denounced SFSU's response, criticizing the institution for its management of the situation.
