1:06:59Now PlayingIn Islamic law, the primary interpretation of Jihad has been armed struggle, either for expanding Islamic political dominance or for defending Islamic lands against non-believers. This expansion is closely linked to the socio-political system of dhimma, involving the three-option offer made by Islamic forces to their enemies: conversion to Islam, subjugation under Islamic rule and payment of jizyah, or battle to the death.
Some scholars view Jihad as a means of self-defense or preemptive action, and others see it as a tool for expansive warfare. The role of Jihad in early Islam, its evolution in classic Islamic law into offensive and defensive forms, and its interpretation in modern Islam are also covered.
In this video we examine relevant Quranic verses and their interpretations by traditional Muslim scholars, Islamic modernists, and modern academic scholars. We discuss the principles of non-aggression and proportionate retaliation in the context of Jihad, as well as the historical and political contexts that influenced these interpretations.
