This verdict stems from events that unfolded in August 2023, when mob violence erupted in Jaranwala, Punjab, following accusations that two Christian men had desecrated the Quran. During those riots, Muslim mobs burned dozens of Christian homes and churches. Although over 100 suspects were arrested for the attacks, their convictions remain unclear. Shan, who was not involved in the initial Quran desecration, was accused of reposting defaced pages of the Quran on his TikTok account during this tumultuous period. His lawyer, Khurram Shahzad, plans to appeal the death sentence, while local priest Naveed Kashif questioned the severity, asking, "Why the court ordered such an extreme verdict when those linked to the attacks are yet to be punished." This case, along with the recent death of 72-year-old Nazir Masih following a mob attack in May 2024, underscores the ongoing tensions and dangers surrounding blasphemy accusations in Pakistan, where such charges can lead to violence and legal persecution, particularly against religious minorities.
